The Market Square Building has functioned as an ‘open-air’ market where town folks gathered to shop and talk and keep in touch with friends and neighbors. It has been a town meeting hall where plans for the improvement and growth of the city were made and actions taken to see that those plans were carried out. It has been the focal point of many a celebration in the city from the inauguration of the presidents to our Sesquicentennial celebration in 1968 with numerous holiday events in between. Even today during mid-summer, we often find Market Square blocked off for a community block party.
