Knowledgeable speakers will tell you about the history of the Miamisburg Mound and the Native American activity that took place in the Miamisburg area.  An Ogalala Lakota Sioux will explain the meaning and history of the Native American Flute.  Also the making of flutes.  You will hear the melodious haunting sounds of the flute.

The Native American vendors are displaying items made in the way of their ancestors.  Feel free to ask question and take advantage of their presence by purchasing outstanding ware.  You are offered the opportunity to experience the taste of buffalo meat.  Buffalo is the most healthy and nourishing of meats.

On this day we remember and celebrate the early settlers who came to this spot along the Great Miami River, and made it their home.  They build their log structures and began to make a permanent life here in the valley.

It's hard to believe, but two of those very early log cabins are still standing after 200 years, and may be seen and toured at the Heritage Village.  Both these structures were built very near the river, and have survived in spite of the 1913 Flood, which destroyed many buildings. (Heritage Village is at the corner of Old Main and Lock St.)

On Pioneer Day we'll reflect on the courage of those early settlers and the skills they needed to succeed.  Heritage Village will be open from noon to 5 p.m., and there will be activities there, as well as at Riverfront Park, which is in walking distance of the Village.  Be sure to visit both venues.  Heritage Village will feature Tours of the cabins, a Petting Zoo and crafters demonstrating the skills of the 1800s settlers.  Horse drawn carriage rides will be available during the afternoon.

Riverfront Park will also feature 1800s crafters along with the Great Lakes Timber Show.  Patty Frazee, a reenactor, will be there, as well as Paddy's Square Dance Caller.  Center Stage entertainment, from 4:30 to 11 p.m. that evening will include the Vintage Ramblers, Noah Wortherspoon and dulcimer music.

Stop at the Historical Society table in Riverfront Park to start or renew your Society membership. A shared heritage and a sense of history are priceless gifts for ourselves and for generations to come. Did you know that the word ‘souvenir’ is actually a French word meaning remembrance or memory? What better time to stock up on your favorite Bicentennial souvenirs and gear to show support for our community’s celebration!

* Celebrate your beard during Miamisburg Bicentennial Celebration.  Brothers of the Brush is a beard growing contest
and is a long standing traditional activity during Miamisburg Anniversary Celebrations. Local men are encouraged to grow
beards, which were commonplace in the 1800s. Participants can then be judged in various categories during the contest.  A Kangaroo Court will assess "fines" to select clean-shaven offenders.

Maybe you prefer a simple moustache. Or, is it the handlebar that catches your eye? Is it a simple, clean goatee that adds the right touch? Maybe you are the full-on lumberjack beard kind of guy? Regardless, now is the time to get that facial hair growing and join the Brothers of the Brush.

Brothers of the Brush is a celebration tradition for Miamisburg, and becoming a member of this Brush is an honor for Bicentennial participants. While men are encouraged to grow some type of facial hair reflective of the time when Miamisburg was founded, there is a price to pay.

To grow a beard or moustache, or combination thereof, you must purchase a license for 25 cents. The holder should be able to produce the license or face dire consequences not limited to “jail” time. You never know where Brothers of the Brush Police will show their bearded faces!

Are you challenged in the facial hair area? Fear not, you can escape public ridicule by becoming a member of the Smoothies Club. A 25-cent license in this club will forgive you the inability to sprout the fuzz.

Growing efforts will be rewarded on June 23 at the Center Stage in Riverfront Park. This is when there will be judging of the longest beard, longest handlebar moustache, Best Moustache Judge’s Choice, Best Full Beard Judge’s Choice, Best Groomed Facial Hair Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice awards. Trophies will be taken home by all winners.

Licenses are on sale now and can be purchased from the Bicentennial Headquarters in the Market Square Building. Larry Williams and Joe Stebbins are serving as committee chairs. Souvenir pins are also available for $1.

Video Documentary On Miamisburg Now Available
By John Warrington, Media Production Chairman

The video documentary “The River Runs Through”, produced by the Miamisburg
Historical Society for the Founders Day dinner on February 20, 2018, is now
available for sale at the Market Square museum during regular visitor hours -
Wednesdays and Saturdays 1:00 to 4:00pm. During the Bicentennial week,
June 16 thru 23, the building will be open everyday from noon to 8:00 pm.

The DVD will sell for $20.00 each plus tax. It chronicles the 200-year history
of the City of Miamisburg in 27 minutes. Written by Dr. Carol O’Connell and
local resident/historian Bobbye Sweny, it chronicles the major people, places
and events that make Miamisburg unique in all the world. It is professionally
narrated by Rev. Kevin Scheuller and was video/photo edited by John Warrington.

Now is your chance to pick up this DVD as a wonderful souvenir for yourself or family members as we
celebrate the Bicentennial of our city during 2018.
